Album Ratings (06/17/2023): Wiz Khalifa, Hit-Boy & 6ix9ine

My old-ass can’t keep up with all these releases.

Wiz Khalifa – See Ya

No matter what Wiz Khalifa does these next few years, I will always view him as a legend. I just think you can’t ignore all of the classic mixtapes and albums he has blessed us with throughout the years. Though Wiz’s latest project, See Ya, isn’t great, it does give me nostalgic vibes.

In See Ya, we get a free-spirited version of Wiz Khalifa. As a matter of fact, the mixtape almost feels like a bunch of freestyles. Not only does Wiz mess around with many different melodies, but there are also songs with mad effects, booming beats, and club vibes. No need to worry, he also still raps hard, giving me flashbacks to his heyday. I think the project is a good listen but not some s**t that is high quality.

Favorite Tracks: “No Competition,” “Came With The Best,” “Close Frame,” “On My Lap,” “In The Game.”

Hit-Boy – SURF OR DROWN Vol. 2

Hit-Boy just did the biggest Father’s Day flex of all time: He dropped a collaboration album with his father, Big Hit, called SURF OR DROWN Vol. 2 (And I thought I was doing something by cooking my dad some cocoa egg this morning).

I know what your first question is: Can Big Hit rap? Of course, he can! As a matter of fact, he sounds very similar to his son. Both Hit-Boy and Big Hit sound cool, animated, and skilled all at the same time. They also do an excellent job of storytelling, bragging, and sounding trill as f**k.

Let’s be honest: It’s cute that Big Hit and Hit-Boy both rap their asses off on this album, but that’s not what moved me the most. THE F**KING BEATS HIT-BOY COOKS UP ON THE ALBUM ARE AMAZING! This dude is really a GOAT producer.

Favorite Tracks: “Sunrise,” “YKWSF,” “Monte Carlo,” and “Show Me.”

6ix9ine – Leyenda Viva

6ix9ine has returned to the music scene with a new reggaeton album called Leyenda. I’ll get this out of the way immediately: He comes across as very likable on it.

I know y’all have deleted all of 6ix9ine’s previous songs from your music library, but if you remember, one of his best releases to date is the reggaeton-inspired “BEBE.” While I wouldn’t call the songs on Leyenda Viva BEBE-esque, you do get nothing but Spanish on the album. What surprises me is how dramatic some of the songs sound. Like, I don’t know what is being said 100% of the time (I failed Spanish in high school); I’m just paying attention to the dramatic singing and emotional instrumentals. Can you believe that this is the same guy that came into the game rocking red rags and talking about shooting people?

Do Y’all want to laugh real quick? OK, here I go: This is easily 6ix9ine’s best album. The music is quality, and there are a few bops here and there. I f**k with this s**t.

Favorite Songs:  “Perra” “Pa Ti,” “WAPAE,” “Sola,” & “MX PR.”
