Rating: 4 out of 5.Whenever Jermaine Dupri links up with someone these days, I think it’s random as hell.
Growing up, I thought Jermaine Dupri was the Wal-Mart version of Puff Daddy. He talked all over the tracks just like Puff and was definitely considered a super producer. While he hasn’t quite dropped a ton of music in the last ten years, these past couple of months, he has been pretty active. Not only was JD a part of one of dvsn’s singles, but he also dropped a joint project with Curren$y. Today, he returned to the music scene with a new single called “Pick It Up” with Jacquees.
“Pick It Up” sounds outdated in the most glorious way possible. In the song, which is powered by this basic, uptempo, old-school-sounding hip-hop beat that would make you want to breakdance, we get passionate vocals, confrontational lyrics, and carefree vibes out of Jacquees. We also get a brief rap verse from Jermaine Dupri that I think completes s**t. Both artists talk about turning their chicks into receptive ChatGPTs that do what they want them to do.
Back in the ’90s, we heard numerous songs that sounded like this…
