Chai Chang Shows Off His “New Reality”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“New Reality” dives into the good, the bad, and the ugly that comes with being on social media.

Chai Chang is a gifted Chinese-Australian singer and songwriter whose music transcends culture, language, and age. Chang often explores the realms of electropop and dance-pop, crafting tracks that are both vibrant and fascinating. Although his musical catalog is currently limited, it’s evident, primarily through his debut single, “New Reality,” that he has a promising future ahead.

“New Reality” offers a lot to enjoy. It boasts a heart-pumping instrumental with a great build-up, futuristic elements, captivating synths, and an exciting tempo, all complemented by invigorating vocals, infectious melodies, and a unique rap element in Mandarin. The song’s elaborate structure keeps the listener engaged throughout. Lyrically, Chai delves into the complexities of being active on social media, addressing the positive and negative aspects of this modern reality (I appreciate how he concludes the song with the line “welcome the new reality,” serving as a reminder that we are bound to the influence of social media). All in all, “New Reality” is relatable, intoxicating, exciting, and very dynamic.

One of the things that stands out to me about Chai Chang is the confidence that he possesses. Recently, he said the following about chasing his dreams:

“I am now in my early 30s. I believe it’s never too late to start something new. It’s my goal to integrate English and Chinese music, whether the audience is from the East or the West.”
