Lil Dicky – Penith (The DAVE Soundtrack) (Album Review)

Lil Dicky shows serious growth (pause) in “Penith (The DAVE Soundtrack).”

5. No Fruits Or Vegetables

Ah, there’s nothing like an anti-fruit anthem!

Yes, this song features very silly lyrics. However, everything else about it is impressive. I particularly enjoy the menacing beat and how Lil Dicky attacks it with a variety of flows, ranging from elementary-sounding ones to more complex ones. Even the hook has the potential to get stuck in your head. That said, it’s worth noting that I don’t want to hear a grown-ass man talk about his hate for vegetables, how he threw up the first time he took a molly, or that he doesn’t make his bed.

4. Jail, Pt. 1 (Bonus Track)

I was dying laughing listening to this track.

In “Jail, Pt. 1,” Lil Dicky provides a perfect play-by-play of his experience serving time, detailing his interactions with “the blacks,” his beef with “the Mexicans,” and how he learned to protect himself by offering to perform fellatio. While the song features a grungy beat and a pretty dope rap style, about four minutes in, you’ll actually only be paying attention to his narrating. At least until he talks about performing a sexual act on a man towards the end (Yea, he takes it there).

You raped dead? LMAO.

3. Harrison Ave.

Yes, Lil Dicky, I’m sure listeners want to hear a story about your first handjob (SMH).

My first paragraph might turn you away from this song, but trust me, it has some good elements. Personally, I really like the soulful, Kanye West-like beat. I also appreciate how Dicky relentlessly drops bars over it, caring less about structure or coming across as a yapper. As for the story he tells, I don’t care about it at all (I understand that your first kiss is a very sentimental story, but I’m not trying to hear that s**t right now).

2. We Good (Bonus Track)

I feel like this album has five outros. In my opinion, “We Good” is the best.

Lil Dicky’s comical lyrics take a backseat in “We Good.” The track’s hard-hitting, celebratory beat steals the show, especially with its atmospheric introduction that transforms into a booming sound. Playing the second fiddle is the catchy, invigorating hook delivered by Dicky. However, the best part of the song for me is when Dicky humorously reminds GaTa that the song is about their friendship, not vajayjay. I just like it when Dicky corrects someone with his nerdy white voice. He did the same s**t to Rich Homie Quan in “$ave That Money.”

1. Honestly

“Honestly” will give you a quick reminder that Lil Dicky is really f**king good on the mic.

In “Second Coming,” Lil Dicky declares himself the next Kanye West. In “Honestly,” he takes on a persona that sounds like an extremely white version of Kanye’s rival, Drake. Firstly, the beat he raps over is something that I can envision the 6God himself rapping over. He also delivers his lines with a level of aggression and introspection reminiscent of Drake. However, I must note that Dicky’s flows, creative punchlines, and wordplay showcase a level of skill that might even surpass anything Drake could deliver.

I feel like Dicky switches between being serious and funny in this track. Some of the things he says about the people doubting him sound genuine.

OVERALL RATING

(C+)

Rappers are fortunate that Lil Dicky maintains a humorous approach because if he took things seriously, he could outshine everyone. I think his rap style is appealing and he rides beats well, despite his name. In Penith (The DAVE Soundtrack), Dicky delivers verses that are both amusing and engaging.

I can discuss the subpar beats or the sometimes annoying lyrics on this album, but I’d rather highlight that the album accomplishes precisely what it intended to do: make you laugh. I really like how Lil Dicky makes a mockery of some of the music we heard in the past while paying homage to it at the same time. I also like how Dicky’s stories sound slightly relatable, slightly ridiculous, and extremely stupid. In 2024, folks need to lighten up, and this album will help you do that.
