I’ve said it before and’ll say it again: Kodak Black is my favorite young rapper when he decides to be serious on the mic. When serious, he displays excellent command of the mic and usually delivers profound lyrics. Unfortunately, these days, Kodak’s serious only every once in a while. Yesterday, he returned to the music scene with a new single called “11am In Malibu.” He sounds somewhat serious in it.
In “11am In Malibu,” Kodak Black speaks about his longevity, being someone that folks are scared of, and sipping on drinks that are dirtier than Kyrie’s handles. He also talks about providing for his family and the fallouts he has had with his old friends.
This song’s instrumental draws inspiration from the beat in Drake’s “8am In Charlotte” track from For All The Dogs. While I won’t go so far as to claim Kodak outdid Drake, I appreciate his rap delivery over the beat. His chosen rhyme pattern is dope, and he skillfully maintains his pace without letting the beat dictate his speed. It’s worth noting, however, that for a significant portion of the track, Kodak sounds higher than the gas prices.
Kodak Black is living life on edge out here.
