ScHoolboy Q Makes His Triumphant Return With “Back n Love” and “Blueslides”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Do you know what no one talks about? The fact that Scottie Pippen had an MVP-like season after Michael Jordan decided to retire abruptly in 1993. Now, with Kendrick Lamar’s departure from TDE (Kendrick was the Jordan of TDE), all eyes are on ScHoolboy Q, the label’s second most prominent rapper. Today, we get a glimpse of his plans as he returns to the music scene with two new singles: “Blueslides” and “Back n Love.”

In “Blueslides,” ScHoolboy Q delves into the risks he’s taken, the wealth he’s shared with his crew, and the hustle required to survive. He also talks about sliding in chicks that aren’t his (Hence the name of the track). What’s particularly intriguing about this track is its juxtaposition of elegant, dinner table-like production with ScHoolBoy Q’s aggressive delivery. It’s a unique blend that somehow works, much like pairing fried chicken with hors d’oeuvres on the same plate.

“Back n Love” sounds nothing like “Blueslides,” and I love that. In the former, ScHoolboy uses this grungy, borderline creepy rap style to brag his ass off about all the luxurious s**t and clout he has. He also reminds us that he’s ready to resort to violence whenever he needs to. As for the beat that powers this song, it is dirtier than a Draymond cheap shot.

So, which song do I prefer? Probably “Blueslides,” but both are good and definitely have me ready for a new album from ScHoolboy Q, which I think might come out March 1st…
