3. Get Deady (Ft. 41)

The original title of this song made me feel very uncomfortable…

“Get Deady” (Originally titled “Get Deady (Offa Pill)”) is what I’d label as ass-kicking drill music. First and foremost, the track is propelled by this electronic beat with a helluva tempo that syncs perfectly with the punching motion. Over it, Fivio Foreign, Kyle Ricch, Jenn Carter, and Tata deliver explosive verses that emphasize their readiness to fight, smash chicks, and indulge in pills. When all is said and done, I believe the song’s style will make it a fan favorite among club-goers.

2. Pain Pressure (Ft. Rowdy Rebel)

I’m happy to announce that I’ve never heard of “pain pressure.” I’ve heard of peer pressure, though.

Two standout drill tracks on this project are tucked away at the end: “Pain Pressure” and “Clutch.”

“Pain Pressure” strikes a serious tone that resonates with me, featuring a chorus I find captivating and a well-balanced mix of vulnerable, violent, and reflective street lyrics from both Fivio Foreign and Rowdy Rebel. Fivio’s urgent, aggressive deliveries complement Rowdy’s laidback and nonchalant style, creating a compelling dynamic. Overall, I’m drawn to the track’s flow and tone.

1. Same 24 (Ft. Meek Mill)

I love that “Same 24” was released the day after Kobe Day.

Interestingly, “Same 24” doesn’t have any drill elements (I feel like artists who choose to work with Fivio always assume he’s on drill time); instead, the track embraces a soulful sound. In their respective verses, Meek Mill and Fivio Foreign rap about the challenges they’ve overcome, the friends and family they’ve put on, and the snakes that want to steal their shine. What stands out is Fivio, who emerges as the star of the show with his introspective and honest lyrics. While Meek contributes an impactful, action-packed verse, it feels too short and off-topic for my liking. Nevertheless, this collaboration between the two East Coast rappers is dope.

OVERALL RATING

(C-)

Fivio Foreign is so much more than just a drill rapper. He proves that in Pain & Love 2.

It’s often overlooked that Fivio Foreign, despite his youthful appearance, is actually 33 years old. This suggests that he’s experienced significant life events and has the maturity to articulate them effectively. Throughout Pain & Love 2, I appreciate how Fivio tackles topics such as his ascent to success, failed relationships, volatile temper, and the lessons learned over the years. What stands out is his clarity and conciseness in conveying these experiences, making the authenticity of his lyrics apparent.

What’s intriguing about this project is how Fivio incorporates unconventional elements into the drill beats he raps over. For example, in “Could It Be,” there’s a mix of drill with Disney-like vibes (although personally, I’m not a fan of that track). Meanwhile, in “Get Deady,” the drill beat is fused with electronic elements. I appreciate that Fivio maintains the essence of drill while experimenting with different sounds and styles.

I enjoyed the verses on this project, but the hooks left much to be desired. They often felt rushed and incomplete, giving some tracks a demo-like quality. Additionally, I wasn’t particularly impressed with the featured artists. Meek Mill’s verse on “Same 24” fell flat, Popcaan’s contribution to “The Best” lacked impact, Swae Lee sounded off in “Could It Be,” and Lil Tjay’s part in “Trauma” felt unnecessary. Overall, I would have preferred if Fivio had carried the project solo.

Pain & Love 2 doesn’t necessarily demand your attention. It’s one of those projects where if you come across it, that’s fine, but it’s not essential listening. It gives off a vibe more akin to a demo tape than a polished release.

It may not be common to describe a Christmas-set, unrated, obscenely grotesque gore-fest as a feel-good movie, but Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 is precisely that.
