DDG is a full-blown artist now. These past few weeks, he has released a bunch of tracks to the world. One of the issues that I think people will find with his recent releases is that they kind of sound like some generic s**t that any SoundCloud rapper can make. In other words, I feel like he’s an artist without a true identity right now. In his latest single, “Shoot Up Your Block,” he gives us a chance to know what is now the most important thing to him.
In “Shoot Up Your Block,” DDG clarifies that he’s not associated with gangs or a certified gangbanger, but if someone threatens his family, he’s ready to go John Wick. He also reflects on adjusting his lifestyle now that he has a child to care for. While I personally don’t condone violence, as a new father myself, I can understand and respect his protective instincts and the weight of his responsibilities.
The style of the song doesn’t quite align with the potency of DDG’s lyrics. “Shoot Up Your Block” features a lo-fi, snappy, woozy Cash Cobain beat that lacks momentum. Over it, DDG relies on this lethargic, Trippie Redd-esque delivery that I just feel doesn’t sound anything close to organic. Oh well.
