I don’t know if you’ve been following DaBaby’s comeback tour, but the s**t is impressive. He’s doing some entertaining interviews, killing freestyles, and, most importantly, dropping some pretty solid music. Today, the Charlotte rapper decided to keep his momentum going by releasing a three-pack Shakur called GHETTO SUPERSTAR: (THE INTRO).
The album kicks off with “DONE TRYING,” and personally, I believe it’s one of DaBaby’s most impressive releases in the past five years. The track is driven by an emotional hip-hop beat, featuring one of those youthful samples often favored by artists like Drake. As for DaBaby, he lays it all out about fame and its accompanying struggles, keeping it real with his lyrics. Additionally, his ability to seamlessly switch up his flow throughout the track is commendable and adds another layer of appreciation.
“GHETTO SUPERSTAR FREESTYLE” features a version of DaBaby that is down to crash something. Gassed by this explosive beat that I’m pretty sure leaves bad smoke in the air, the “Babysitter” creator delivers bars intended to rattle his competition, call out friends who turned on him, and silence the doubters. His bars are also meant to make women do that shake they do when they hear some out-of-pocket s**t.
In “JUDY,” DaBaby and Skilla Baby adopt a drill sergeant persona, but their focus isn’t on training soldiers; it’s on empowering confident, assertive women with alluring curves and untapped sexual energy. Personally, I find the song’s fusion of Zorro-esque horns with elements reminiscent of Luke Campbell’s style to be a bit peculiar. The chorus lacks enthusiasm, and the verses feel somewhat lacking in inspiration. However, despite these critiques, I believe its infectious energy has the potential to ignite a club and get everyone moving.
One thing DaBaby is going to do is entertain. This brief project is very entertaining.
