mgk Returns With “BMXXing”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

mgk is back to rapping like the rent due.

mgk (aka Machine Gun Kelly) has had an interesting career thus far. While he started out sounding like the ultimate battle rapper, he eventually morphed into an alternative rock singer. I actually prefer his latter style. These days, mgk is merging his two sides in his music, resulting in something that sounds pure as hell. The Cleveland native’s latest single is the introspective “BMXXing.”

In “BMXXing,” mgk compares skateboarding to overcoming the trials and tribulations of living on the edge. He uses the word “grind” to highlight his hustler mentality and recounts his teen upbringing, reflecting on his broke and acne days. I love how mgk drops his bars at a frantic pace over serene production that gives me 2005 Lupe Fiasco vibes.

mgk has found his groove as a rapper, to me.
