3. DBZ (Ft. Method Man, Denzel Curry & Madlib)

All three rappers go Super Saiyan in this track.

This song made waves because Denzel Curry allegedly dissed Kendrick Lamar in it. Here are the lines in question:

When I grab the mic, I crush your stamina, you will be damaged
‘Cause using big words don’t make you lyrical
And going backwards in a swimmin’ pool don’t make you spiritual
So if I bought a brand new whip, they call it (wait a minute)
Damn, whatever the next line is, I’m ballin’
I’m the current boss, currency is what I come across

It’s a bit of a stretch, but the “swimming pool” line could be a nod to Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank)” track, and the comment about “big words” could also allude to Kendrick’s reputation for being a philosophical rapper. Aside from these subtle jabs, I found Denzel’s verse OK. However, Your Old Droog and Method Man delivered outstanding verses. Their punchlines are top-notch, their flows are smooth as butter, and their lyrics are genuinely amusing (Your Old Droog’s lyrics dedicated to Dillon Brooks had me rolling). Overall, if you’re a hip-hop fan, you’re bound to appreciate this track.

2. How Do You Do It?

It’s funny how all the cool kids went down in the power rankings after high school.

In “How Do You Do It?,” Your Old Droog does some reminiscing. Throughout the song, he reflects on his broke days and the struggle to keep up with all the cool kids who had money. The silver lining is that those tough times taught him valuable lessons about himself.

“How Do You Do It?” is powered by an emotional beat by Harry Fraud that I absolutely love. I appreciate how Your Old Droog uses a raw, inquisitive style of rapping over it. It makes the track sound extra genuine.

1. I Think I Love Her

When I saw no grammar errors in the title, I knew Droog was in love love.

The first thing that caught my attention about “I Think I Love Her” is the production. It flips Michael Jackson’s classic “We’ve Got A Good Thing Going” track from his Ben album from 1972. Interestingly, this updated version of the sample is a lot simpler. Over it, Your Old Droog sounds ridiculously smitten with love. He talks about loving this chick so much that he comes across as a sucker for love to his family and friends. The number one thing I like about the track is the hook; it’s catchy and real as hell. The second thing I like about the track is how, despite his mushy words, Droog maintains this gutter sound.

RGM RATING

(88%)

Your Old Droog is good as s**t. Let’s break this album down by category:

Production (A)

From a production standpoint, this album absolutely delivers. Movie features an array of beats, ranging from dark and soulful to vintage-sounding, all with a distinct Griselda-like flavor. And I mean, literally, all of them have that vibe. As a fan of these beats, I must give the production an A.

Content (A-)

Your Old Droog relies on this anti-social approach when he raps, and I f**king love it! Instead of focusing on the flashy s**t other rappers often talk about, he dives into themes like falling in love, his competitive nature, and his turbulent past. This might be the most relatable underground rap album ever.

Raps (B+)

Your Old Droog is what I would call a professional rapper. He literally enters the booth, puts his head down, and straight-up spits. I applaud his wordplay, how he digs into beats, and how his deliveries come across as straightforward, featuring zero fluff. The only thing I can remotely critique is his tone. If he were a little more animated, I could see his verses standing out even more. Nonetheless, I am not complaining at all.

Guest Appearances (B+)

I personally didn’t need Denzel Curry on “DBZ;” however, Curry did add some southern flavor to a heavily New York-sounding album. On the other hand, Yaasin Bey and Method Man were absolutely outstanding in their respective guest appearances.

Conclusion:

Movie is an album that deserves your full attention; especially if you are a true hip-hop fans.
