Childish Gambino, Jorja Smith & Amaarae Illuminate “In The Night”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
Childish Gambino, In The Night

Childish Gambino continues to explore diverse musical directions with his releases.

Childish Gambino has always defied categorization. Just as he mastered stand-up comedy, he pivoted to sitcoms. From there, he transitioned into major films, establishing himself as a versatile actor with the freedom to explore any role. Musically, Gambino has followed a similar trajectory. After perfecting rap, he delved into eclectic genres that diverged significantly from his early work in rap.

Soon, Childish Gambino will release a soundtrack for his new movie titled “Bando Stone and the New World.” Following the punk-rock track “Lituania,” we now have “In The Night,” another eclectic addition to the soundtrack.

In “In The Night,” Childish Gambino tries to woo a girl he’s interested in, urging her to leave her boyfriend because he senses she’s no longer into him. Jorja Smith, playing the girl, agrees, admitting she’s been thinking about Gambino while kissing her current man. As expected, things take a turn for the worse, as often happens with infidelity. Despite the toxic lyrics, the vocal performances from Gambino, Jorja, and Amaarae are soothing, enticing, intoxicating, and spicy. Their voices layer beautifully over the silky, island-inspired, dance-ready production.
