Childish Gambino: Ranking His Top 5 Albums | RGM

We rank the top 5 Childish Gambino albums thus far.

5. 3.15.20/ATAVISTA (2020/2024)

This was the first time I wasn’t feeling Childish Gambino’s experimenting.

Everything about this album was unconventional. It dropped on an unusual day, had bizarre artwork, featured unexpected guest appearances from 21 Savage and Ariana Grande, and exuded strange vibes throughout. It almost feels as if it was set in the real year 3005, with ChatGPT handling half of the album’s production. Even though it’s not my favorite, there are some standout tracks, like the dance-ready “Algorithm” and the quirky “Little Foot Big Foot.”

Favorite Track: “Algorithm”
RGM Grade: (C)

4. Kauai (2014)

Every artist has that one project that everyone loves but doesn’t consider their best; for Childish Gambino, that project is “Kauai.”

The vibes presented in Kauai are sponsored by the ocean. Throughout the seven-track project, you hear sea breezes and other soothing island elements. Sounding like someone who just took his lover to the best beach in the world, Childish Gambino delivers exuberant melodies and feel-good, carefree lyrics aimed at living life in the moment. All in all, this is a project that will feel good on your soul.

Best Track: “Sober”
RGM Grade: (B-)

3. Camp (2011)

Childish Gambino’s official debut showcased the rawest version of the rapper yet.

Childish Gambino had something to prove as a rapper in Camp. From the moment you press play on the album, starting with “Outside,” you encounter a hungry Gambino who spits with a battle-rap-like aggression, ready to convince you he’s the chosen one who made it out of the mud. Though some tracks feature somewhat low-key beats that might have come from SoundClick, there’s an organic quality to the project that will resonate with every aspiring rapper out there.

Best Track: “Heartbeat”
RGM Grade: (B)

2. Because Of The Internet (2013)

This is the album that turned Childish Gambino into a superstar artist.

This album truly encapsulates Childish Gambino’s commercial rap persona. Throughout Because Of The Internet, you encounter some of his flashiest rap deliveries, most unapologetic lyrics, and unique flows. He also showcases his prowess over beats steeped in strong hip-hop flavors. Simultaneously, a significant portion of the album explores experimental elements, featuring breezy instrumentals and poignant singing performances. This record marked a pivotal turning point in Childish Gambino’s career.

Best Track: “3005”
RGM Grade: (B)

1. Awaken, My Love! (2016)

After sitting on this album for a few months, I finally realized how f**king amazing it is.

I always look forward to artists experimenting, and Childish Gambino is one of those artists who never disappoints. After the rap-heavy Because Of The Internet, Gambino blessed us with a retro-sounding, R&B-driven effort featuring virtually no rapping and a collection of anthems reminiscent of classic black television theme songs. While some of his newer fans might not have understood his vision upon the album’s release, letting it soak in and embracing its unique style reveals a project that is timeless in every way.

Best Track: Redbone
RGM Grade: (B+)

It may not be common to describe a Christmas-set, unrated, obscenely grotesque gore-fest as a feel-good movie, but Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 is precisely that.
Thankfully, Olivia Rodrigo was a good sport about it.
