Libby Whitehouse’s “Something” is Unapologetically Real

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Libby Whitehouse’s newest single is relatable but not forced.

As a 24-year-old, I can relate to the pressure of having to figure everything out for myself. I only moved out of my parents’ house about two months ago. Libby Whitehouse, who is around the same age as me, addresses these exact feelings in her single “Something.”

The lyrics tackle many emotions and experiences that resonate deeply with me. Some of my standout lines are: “Waste my nights and I don’t know why. Maybe I’ve got some things to work on right now. I’ll be fine; all I need is time to do everything that I want to right now.” Another standout is: “My friends, we get messed up. Chasing a dream we can’t see. Don’t mind us; we’re good at making the best of things. Oh, we all want to feel something.” I bring up the lyrics because a common trap that songs can fall into is trying too hard to be relatable, which often results in falling flat. However, Whitehouse manages to avoid that pitfall. Everything she sings feels like her genuine experiences, and as a young woman in her twenties, it comes across as current and authentic.

Whitehouse says about the song, “Being a girl in your early twenties feels like the best and worst thing ever, but we’re all trying our best, and without realizing it, we all go through the same things. This song is to let you know that it’s okay to feel 100 things at once when trying to be ‘something’. Make sure you scream it with your friends; it helps!” I would definitely agree.

Something is available to listen to right now.
