Céline Dion is officially back.
After much rumor and speculation, Céline Dion returned to the stage for the first time since 2020 at the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony, much to the delight of her fans, performing “L’Hymne à l’amour” by French singer Édith Piaf.
The last time we saw Céline Dion, she released her stunning documentary, I Am Céline Dion, which chronicled her forced hiatus from performing due to her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis. It was clear, though, that she wasn’t one to give up. “If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl,” she stated. And I won’t stop. I won’t stop.”
Her performance was the subject of rumors and speculation before it happened. French journalist Thierry Moreau, alongside TMZ, stated that Dion would perform a duet with musical superstar Lady Gaga, with the two singing the iconic French song “La Vie en Rose.” However, the two icons ended up performing separately, with Gaga performing Zizi Jeanmaire’s “Mon Truc En Plumes.”
This isn’t Dion’s first time in Paris, nor her first time performing at the Olympics. The Grammy winner previously performed “The Power of the Dream” at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. She has also visited Paris many times before and expressed her love and admiration for the city in a recent statement on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Every time I return to Paris, I’m reminded of the abundant beauty and joy still waiting to be experienced in the world.” Dion adds, “I love Paris, and I’m thrilled to be back! Many thanks to our wonderful friends at The Louvre!”
