Lil Yachty is everywhere.
Jean Dawson is one of those artists I’m familiar with, but I can’t quite name three of his songs off the top of my head (I like to be honest with y’all sometimes). That doesn’t mean he’s not talented. What I appreciate about him is his willingness to experiment with genres, defying any box people might try to put him in just because he’s Black with long hair.
Since last year, Lil Yachty has been on fire. He’s collaborated with big names like Drake, J. Cole, Ian (Tyler, The Creator’s favorite rapper), YG, and more. Quietly and almost unnoticed, he’s been building a legendary run.
“Die For Me” is driven by a dramatic, glitchy instrumental that feels like something Jelly Roll could tear up. Jean Dawson stands out with a variety of engaging vocal styles, with his main delivery coming through strong and powerful. Lyrically, he pours his heart out about the emotional toll of not having his female counterpart around. Lil Yachty, despite the unconventional beat, drops a solid rap verse, expressing the unconditional love he has for someone he’s been close to for a while. Interestingly, I can easily imagine Yachty handling Jean’s part just as effectively.
