TOP 5

5. Mr. Nice Watch

“Mr. Nice Watch” boasts a futuristic/Terminator-like sound, transporting listeners to an intergalactic realm where J. Cole takes center stage.

J. Cole sounds confident as hell in “Mr. Nice Watch.” BUT, DAMN THAT, GINA! This song is on my top 5 list because of Jay-Z’s verse and how he’s going at Wayne’s head (supposedly) in it. When it’s all said and done, this will go down as one of Jay’s most competitive verses.

The big brother/little brother dynamic between Cole and Jay is cool.

4. Sideline Story

“Sideline Story” embodies J. Cole’s journey as an underdog determined to prove himself.

The way J. Cole raps on this track can be seen as a forecast of his future dominance in the rap game. His delivery exudes confidence and demands the listeners’ attention, leaving a lasting impression. It’s probably how McDonald’s felt when they introduced their secret sauce to the world.

The chorus attached to “Sideline Story” sounds mellow but still effective, reminiscent of a catchy ballad from primary school. Its straightforwardness adds to the song’s charm and evokes a youthful and innocent vibe.

Overall, I love how inspirational this track feels from all angles.

3. Breakdown

“Breakdown” had a brouhaha with my soul.

J. Cole channels an incredible amount of passion, hurt, and aggression in “Breakdown,” evoking such strong emotions that listeners might even feel compelled to react to the situations described despite not personally knowing the individuals involved.

What sets “Breakdown” apart is that it showcases what J. Cole excels at. He effortlessly delivers powerful, vivid bars that captivate the listener. Yet, he also showcases his versatility by seamlessly transitioning into harmonizing towards the end of the song, akin to the gracefulness of a hummingbird. This impressive display of skill and artistry is further enhanced by the perfectly matched beat, creating a harmonious union between heavy-hitting elements and moments of exquisite beauty.

 2. Lost Ones

It’s so fitting that “Lost Ones” follows “In the Morning” on this album, right? So, Cole hit it in the morning, and now his girl is pregnant!

“Lost Ones” delves into the perspective of a young J. Cole and his pregnant girlfriend, symbolizing a significant moment in their lives. The intense dialogue between the two characters as they contemplate whether to keep the child they created together is nothing short of chilling. The contrasting emotions are noticeable, with the scared and timid side of the man’s perspective juxtaposed against the aggressive and assertive demeanor of the woman.

“Lost Ones” serves as a cautionary tale that prompts listeners to reconsider the potential consequences and responsibilities associated with having sex raw.

1. Lights Please

I appreciate how J. Cole handles bucketheads.

“Lights Please” falls under the conscious rap genre while incorporating elements of comedic genius. Rather than force-feeding the listener a moral lesson, Cole shares his own experience with a skeezer, aiming to resonate with and provoke agreement from his audience. The unique blend of storytelling, introspection, and comedic elements sets this song apart, earning it a well-deserved place in rap history.

This debut is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, it delivers some incredible hip-hop tracks packed with classic verses; on the other hand, it feels a bit stale since many of the songs were already released before the album dropped. That said, J. Cole did enough with this project to get people excited about his future in music. He showcased his charisma, rapped over a variety of hard-hitting beats, talked about his potential to become a major star, and reveled in his newfound fame. Ultimately, the album felt like a celebration of how far he had come, and after its release, J. Cole started to make his mark.
