Rating: 4 out of 5.Have y’all even noticed that Wale has been dropping new music?
I’ve always been a big fan of Wale for a few personal reasons. For one, he’s Nigerian-American like me. Secondly, he’s from the DMV, just like I am. And lastly, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate the depth of the messages he’s always delivered in his raps. That being said, my biggest gripe with Wale is that he doesn’t drop enough music. So, it was a pleasant surprise when the 39-year-old rapper (who’s just days away from turning 40) released two new singles last week: “Ghetto Speak” and “Mission Statement.” Then, this past Friday, he dropped another track called “What’s The Play” featuring Chaz French.
Of all the singles Wale has released recently, “What’s The Play” stands out as my favorite. In the track, Wale and Chaz French dive into their past relationships, exploring how love evolves, jealousy intensifies, and people drift apart. Wale blends smooth raps with melodic touches, while Chaz French comes through with a slick, catchy chorus that really brings the track together. Both of their styles fit the smooth production. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind giving this one a few more spins next week.
There are more versions of “Slut Me Out” than Wale releases, and that makes me sick.
