Lovato helps a new era in the digital age!
Pop star and former child actor Demi Lovato recently joined California Governor Gavin Newsom as he signed two bills designed to protect child social media influencers from financial exploitation. The new laws expand safeguards for child influencers on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, addressing the evolving challenges of exploitation in the digital world.
“While much has changed since the early days of Hollywood, our commitment to protecting kids from exploitation remains unwavering here in California,” Governor Newsom said. “Child actors were once exploited in old Hollywood. In 2024, it’s now child influencers. Today, we put an end to that exploitation with these new protections.”
Lovato, a vocal advocate for children’s rights in the entertainment industry, added, “To create a better future for young stars, we need to implement protections for minors in the digital space. I’m grateful to Governor Newsom for modernizing the Coogan Law to ensure children featured on social media are fairly compensated and have agency when they come of age.”
As the distinction between traditional and digital celebrity continues to blur, these laws represent a crucial step forward in protecting young influencers from exploitation.
