Rating: 4.5 out of 5.I still care what J. Cole has to say.
If you overlook J. Cole’s apology to Kendrick Lamar, he’s had an impressive few years. Just to highlight some achievements, he starred in Lil Durk’s Grammy-winning track “All My Life,” hit his first number one with “First Person Shooter,” delivered a few more fire guest verses, and dropped Might Delete Later, which many (including me) consider one of his best projects ever. While some might argue he’s no longer in their top three, his work output suggests otherwise—he’s producing as if he still is. Today, Cole kept the momentum going with his latest drop, “Port Antonio,” released on YouTube.
J. Cole addresses several topics in his track “Port Antonio.” One of the standout moments is when he hints at wanting Drake and Kendrick Lamar to resolve their tensions, emphasizing that he doesn’t want to lose a close friend or feel responsible for someone else’s downfall. He also reflects on the reality that you can’t satisfy everyone, while confidently asserting that he’s still at the top of his game.
What makes the track special is how it showcases the same formula that Cole thrived on early in his career: a dramatic beat (sampling a classic hip-hop track) paired with a focused version of Cole, spitting raw, heartfelt bars. That s**t will never get old to me.
