Pharrell Williams Releases “Piece By Piece – Music from the Motion Picture” (Review)

Is Drake making motion pictures? No he isn’t.

Pharrell Williams’ legacy is stamped. I consider everything he’s doing these days house money. That said, P is making some very unique house money. Today, a soundtrack for a new movie of his called Piece By Piece hit streaming services. Though it has some new tracks, it’s mainly a “best of” album for him. Below, I will highlight all the new tracks from the project.

One of the driving forces of this project is the quirky “Piece by Piece.” The track features an electrifying performance where Pharrell sings about building connections. The chorus stands out the most—it’s vintage and catchy, guaranteed to stick in your head. Overall, the dance-ready production and Pharrell’s diverse vocal styles makes the track a memorable listen.

“VIRGINIA Boy (Remix)” is easily the hardest track from this project. In it, Pharrell and Tyler, The Creator trade tough-ass verses. While Pharrell pays homage to his upbringing in Virginia, Tyler honors Los Angeles by vividly describing the fun, sticky, and cultural experiences that occur there. Both spit with supreme MC confidence, which was needed to hang with the punchy, old-school hip-hop beat.

“L’EGO Odyssey” sounds like some s**t you might hear in The Emperor’s New Groove. It has a very Egyptian feel. As for the song’s message, it revolves around letting your ego go, which I’m sure a bunch of Pharrell’s peers need to do. All in all, I think this is one of those tracks you probably won’t go back to.

I would probably love “For Real” if I was a Ken doll driving down a breezy highway in LA. Unfortunately, I’m a big-ass black dude with boogers in his nose and bad shape-up right now. Anywho, the track boasts this airy, upbeat instrumental combined with glitzy Pharrell vocals and lyrics that speak on the importance of feeling secure within.

If you are fortunate enough to be experiencing Pharrell Williams’ music for the first time, diving into this project will be an absolute blast.

Thankfully, Olivia Rodrigo was a good sport about it.
