Xzibit Returns With “Play This At My Funeral”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

X to the Z still has a little left in the gas tank.

I’m old enough to remember listening to Xzibit’s music before his Pimp My Ride fame. One track that stood out back in the day was “What You See Is What You Get,” which I thought had one of the best music videos ever. In the video, Xzibit walks through his neighborhood, encountering all the wild and chaotic events of an ordinary day there. With his big return, the LA-based rapper decided to pay homage to that iconic video by somewhat recreating it for his new single, “Play This At My Funeral.”

Despite this track’s title, it doesn’t quite sound like Xzibit is ready for y’all to stick a fork in him just yet.
In “Play This At My Funeral,” he spends a few bars reflecting on his past accomplishments and the tough background he came from, while also making it clear that he’s still down to whoop feet if necessary. I love song’s piano-heavy production—it gives me Kanye vibes. I also appreciate that X to the Z still flows well and has great command of his voice. Overall, I enjoyed this track from the legend.

Maybe Kendrick Lamar will bring out Xzibit at his Super Bowl show. I doubt it, but hey, who knows!

Thankfully, Olivia Rodrigo was a good sport about it.
