Ella Mai Drops “3” EP

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Ella Mai decided to gift us something even though it was her birthday.

Ella Mai made an impressive entrance into the music world with several major hits, even earning Grammy awards and collaborating with stars like Chris Brown and Wizkid. However, the London native has been relatively quiet this year, with only one single feature on DJ Mustard’s latest project. Recently, she returned with a new EP, 3, featuring three tracks that showcase her classic style and smooth R&B vibe. This release marks a subtle yet notable comeback for Ella.

The EP’s opener, “Hearts On Deck,” features a smooth, snap-laden beat crafted by DJ Mustard, adding a mellow vibe. Ella Mai’s vocals have a subtle allure, as she assures her partner that he’s about to make the best move by being with her. While the track has a slick, stylish appeal, it may not be the EP’s most memorable moment.

When it comes to memorable, “One Of These” is that. Backed by a creatively flipped sample of Cee-Lo and Timbaland’s quirky beat from “I’ll Be Around,” the song brings an unexpected charm. Though she doesn’t rap, Ella’s delivery is fiery and packed with swagger, blending cool confidence with genuine affection. Her lyrics reflect how deeply in love she is, feeling adored like Juliet by her partner. Toss this on whenever you find yourself picking flowers.

“Little Things” is undeniably one of the sweetest tracks on Ella Mai’s album. In it, she shares how she expresses her love by doing small, thoughtful gestures to make her partner happy—like pouring drinks and turning on NBA League Pass for chill nights together. While the song might feel somewhat stylistically generic, there’s a genuine warmth and sincerity that makes it feel like an honest snapshot of her current relationship.
