Future and Metro Boomin are sipping on delusional juice.
The story of 2024 hip-hop cannot be told without mentioning the 20-v-1 feud Drake faced earlier in the year. While you could argue this was inevitable, given how he was rubbing people the wrong way, the catalyst for the drama was Future and Metro Boomin’s track “Like That” and, to a lesser extent, their entire WE DON’T TRUST YOU and WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU albums, which featured numerous disses and collaborators from that group of 20 adversaries.
Recently, in an interview with GQ, Future and Metro Boomin attempted to rewrite history—or at least make us question our understanding of what really happened between them and Drake. Here are a few excerpts from their conversation:
Metro Boomin on the Drake disses on the two albums:
“Me and [Drake], we had a personal issue, and for the record, not over no girl or nothing silly like that. It was a personal issue that really hurt me and disappointed me. But if you take all the rap entertainment out of it, it’s like, have you ever been real cool with somebody, and y’all fell out over something? It happens every day. It’s just regular sh*t. This just happens to have an audience.”
“People really think we sat for 2 years, making 2 albums [to be] like, ‘Yo, f**k this dude.’ What kind of sh*t is that?”
“You really think we are going to spend that much time, effort, resources on just trying to get at somebody on an album? … That’s some serious hate.”
Future on his beef with Drake:
“There was a beef? I didn’t even know there was a beef. I didn’t even know they had nothing going on. I ain’t never participated in rap battles, man.”
Metro Boomin on his regrets about his Tweets during Drake feud:
“Now I did have my moment online, which I do regret. I should have been stronger than that. That was out of character for me.” “But at a certain point, it’s like, I don’t rap, bro, so you’re going to just sh*t on me on all of these songs… I’m not going to get in the booth, so I’m finna tweet at you.”
Future on Kendrick Lamar not calling him one of the big 3:
“He said ‘Big Three’ on my song. […] I’m supposed to be the one who gets mad; I’m still confused about that.” “
That’s what was so f*cked up about the sh*t. To the point where I’m so player that I ain’t even said anything to the public about how I feel about it. Like, why is everybody mad when he was talking about me on my song?”
“So y’all just forgot about me, I ain’t part of this Big Three, I’m nobody on my song, man. If I didn’t get mad, nobody should have gotten mad! If I would have been really mad about it and I made something out of it.”
What else are they going to say? The Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight was real? The sky is yellow? I don’t love this revisionist history from these two legends; however, I do appreciate that Metro Boomin acknowledged he was doing too much when he let his Twitter fingers get the best of him. The more and more I hear these weird stories come out, the more and more I am on Drake’s side. All in all, I think it’s time to put this beef to bed once and for all.
