Eminem’s Mom Debbie Nelson Passes Away

Debbie Nelson was 69 years old.

TMZ reported today that Debbie Nelson, Eminem’s mother, has passed away at the age of 69 after a battle with advanced lung cancer.

Eminem often addressed his tumultuous relationship with his mother in his music, with songs like “Cleaning Out My Closet” shedding light on issues he described as neglect, abuse, and manipulation. Despite their strained history, the world came to know Debbie through these deeply personal lyrics.

Growing up as an Eminem fan, I always found it wild how openly he aired out his personal struggles, particularly with his parents, in his music. At the same time, I respected his right to share his experiences. It’s bittersweet to reflect on how his turbulent upbringing in Detroit—highlighted in his songs and 8 Mile—shaped his artistry. While no one would wish for such a challenging childhood, it raises the question: would we have the legendary Eminem without it? Life truly is complicated.

R.I.P. to Debbie Nelson.
