Patti Smith Says She’s Thankfully Fine After Collapsing On Stage

The rock icon is, thankfully, well.

Legendary rock icon Patti Smith is in good spirits following a brief medical incident during her performance in Brazil on Wednesday night. While on stage with Soundwalk Collective, the 77-year-old artist unexpectedly collapsed, falling backward and hitting her head, leaving the audience in shock.

Despite the alarming moment, Smith was escorted offstage in a wheelchair but returned just 10 minutes later, still in the wheelchair, to address the crowd. She assured fans she was okay before delivering a heartfelt performance of “Because the Night.”

Following reports exaggerating the severity of the incident, Smith took to social media to clarify what happened:

“This is to let everyone know that I am fine. A grossly exaggerated account is being spread by the press and on social media. I had some post-migraine dizziness. I had a small incident, left the stage, and returned 10 minutes later, talked to the people, told them I was fine, and sang Wing and Because the Night.”*

She also urged fans not to believe misinformation, adding:

“With all the strife in the world, this explainable incident does not merit so much attention. Thank you, everyone, for your concern. Trust me, I am fine.”

Patti Smith Assures Fans She’s “Fine” After On-Stage Collapse in Brazil

This isn’t the first time the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has faced a medical emergency. In 2023, she was hospitalized with a “sudden illness” that forced her to cancel a series of concerts in Italy. Fortunately, she was discharged after a few days of observation and made a full recovery.

As a pioneering force in rock music, Smith continues to prove her resilience. It’s a relief to see her back on her feet and ready to keep rocking!
