Akom is a genius for embracing country music.
One thing Akon is going to do is hustle. In a recent interview with TMZ, the global hitmaker revealed that he’s in the process of re-recording his entire music catalog—in country music. That may sound unexpected, but with country music steadily dominating streaming platforms and genre crossovers becoming more common, the move is surprisingly savvy. And the first taste of this experiment? A country remix of his 2008 hit “Right Now (Na Na Na),” aptly retitled “Drunk Right Now (Na Na Na).”
A major shoutout goes to John Ross, who brings the soul of Nashville to this reimagined track. His twangy vocals and heartfelt delivery transform the hook and his verse into something straight off a modern country playlist—without losing the DNA of Akon’s original hit.
As for Akon, he doesn’t just phone it in. He delivers a revamped verse with a more rowdy, mischievous edge—talking about hanging out with women that aren’t his and out-drinking everyone in the room. It’s playful, a little reckless, and totally on brand.
What really makes this remix work is the balance: it keeps the synths and infectious melodies of the original while adding just enough southern flavor to make it feel fresh. It’s not a gimmick—it’s a real effort at genre-blending, and it pays off.
Jits will finally get to appreciate Akon. I’m excited for him.
