Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist Reunite With “1995”

Freddie Gibbs had a full-time job in 1995. I don’t even think he’s 40 yet.

In about a week, Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist are dropping the sequel to their 2020 masterpiece Alfredo — and let’s be real, they’re doing s**t bigger than Brian Windhorst this time around. The new project will feature 14 tracks, with guest appearances from JID, Larry June, and Anderson.Paak, and just to flex harder, they’re releasing a full-blown movie too (which, depending on when you’re reading this, might already be out). The first taste of this cinematic rap experience? A single called “1995.”

“1995” is butter-smooth and cold as marble countertops. The Alchemist lays down one of the most soulful, grown-man beats you’ll hear this year — the kind of joint that feels like vintage leather and expensive cologne. Freddie pulls up with a laid-back yet razor-sharp flow, lacing the track with bars about his pimpish finesse, his legacy, and the copycats he’s sonned along the way. It’s swagger rap for the people who eat greasy burgers with forks and sip dark liquor without flinching.
