Whenever a male rapper makes a song about a girl being their “friend,” it usually means they’re actually smashing them.
YG’s 2025 rollout has been nothing short of spectacular (And I ain’t talking about the scammer from Pretty Ricky). After shocking fans with the vulnerability of “2004,” where he shared painful experiences from his past, and then following up with “HOLLYWOOD,” a laid-back Cali anthem with Shoreline Mafia, he’s shown both emotional depth and hometown pride. Now, with “LOVERS OR FRIENDS,” he’s continuing that streak—this time diving into the gray area between romance and friendship.
The production on “LOVERS OR FRIENDS” is vintage California at its finest. The beat oozes 90s hotel party vibes—funky basslines, smooth grooves, and a bounce that practically begs for movement. Leon Thomas brings the track to life with a buttery, traditional R&B hook that’s equal parts catchy and soulful.
YG steps in with the raw, unfiltered storytelling he’s known for. His verses are honest, sometimes blunt, but always relatable. He walks listeners through his emotional tug-of-war, questioning if he should pursue something deeper or keep things platonic. In the second verse, he even lays out his definition of what separates lovers from friends, adding a sense of clarity to the theme.
What makes “LOVERS OR FRIENDS” work so well is the traditional structure paired with a refreshing sense of emotional honesty. It’s a classic two-verse, one-hook format, but it never feels outdated. Instead, it feels timeless, especially with that unmistakable West Coast flavor.
Whether you’re in your feelings or just looking for something smooth to vibe to, this track has both the soul and bounce to satisfy.
