Ed Sheeran’s “Play” Targets Top 5 Debut on Billboard 200 Despite Lowest Opening Yet

Ed Sheeran’s new album Play is on track for a Top 5 debut on the Billboard 200, despite marking the lowest opening week of his career.

Ed Sheeran’s latest album Play is projected to debut in the top five of next week’s Billboard 200, with estimated first-week sales of 65–75K units. While that’s an impressive number for most artists, it marks the lowest opening of Sheeran’s career. For comparison, his blockbuster 2017 album ÷ (Divide) arrived with a massive 450K units, underscoring just how high his bar has been set.

Despite the softer commercial start, Play offers plenty for fans to enjoy. The album showcases Sheeran’s trademark melodic songwriting and layered production, led by early singles “Azizam” and “Sapphire.” These tracks blend his signature acoustic warmth with subtle pop experimentation, setting the tone for the rest of the record.

New cuts like “Don’t Look Down” and “War Game” highlight a more introspective side of Sheeran. Lyrically, he explores personal growth, the complexities of love, and the challenges of fame, all wrapped in catchy hooks and polished arrangements that prove his songwriting remains sharp.

Whether or not Play matches the commercial highs of his past, the album reinforces Sheeran’s ability to craft relatable, heartfelt music. For listeners, it’s another chapter in a career defined by emotional connection and consistent creativity.
