These are the defining hip-hop events that made history today.
1. Eminem Drops “The Marshall Mathers LP 2” (November 5, 2013)

Was The Marshall Mathers LP 2 on the same legendary level as the original? Hell no — but let’s be honest, that bar was nearly impossible to reach. Still, the album packed plenty of firepower that added more weight to Eminem’s already massive catalog. “Rap God” became an instant cultural moment and lyrical showcase, “The Monster” featuring Rihanna dominated charts and airwaves, and fans were treated to a long-awaited collaboration between Eminem and Kendrick Lamar on “Love Game.” Even if it didn’t match the first, MMLP2 proved that Slim Shady could still deliver hits and lyrical gymnastics like no one else.
Standout Tracks: “Rap God,” “The Monster” & “Survival.”
2. Tupac’s Estate Dropped “The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory” (November 5, 1996)

Tupac Shakur, under his alias Makaveli, released The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory just two months after his untimely death — a fact that made the album’s release haunting in itself. The eerie artwork and chilling tracks like “Hail Mary” and “To Live and Die in L.A.” only deepened the mystery surrounding Pac’s passing. At the time, fans likely thought this would be his final word — his last message to the world. Instead, it became the first in a long line of posthumous releases that kept his voice alive and his legacy echoing for decades to come.
Standout Tracks: “Hail Mary,” “Me & My Girlfriend” & “To Live and Die in L.A.”
