On This Day in Hip-Hop Culture (11/6): King Von & Speaker Knockerz

These are the defining hip-hop events that made history today.

1. King Von Passes Away (November 5, 2020)

King Von was the definition of a controversial hip-hop figure. Hailing from Chicago and closely affiliated with Lil Durk, Von built his reputation in the streets long before his music took off. But just before his passing, he began to make serious waves in the rap game, with breakout hits like “Took Her to the O” and “Crazy Story” putting his raw storytelling and gritty realism on full display. Tragically, his life was cut short after a violent altercation with Quando Rondo and his crew. Despite his brief time in the spotlight, King Von’s impact on modern street rap remains undeniable.

2. Speaker Knockerz Birthday (November 5, 1994)

The future once looked incredibly bright for Speaker Knockerz. Before his tragic passing at just 20 years old from a heart attack, the young artist had already achieved more than most — producing his own beats, crafting viral hits, and building a strong online following. It was clear that his talent and drive were setting him up for something much bigger.
