On This Day in Hip-Hop (01/04): Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars & Cardi B

Today marks the anniversary of several major albums, songs, and moments that helped shape the history of hip-hop and R&B.

1. January 4, 2018: Kendrick Lamar Released “All The Stars” With SZA

Do you know what Kendrick Lamar’s most-streamed track actually is? It’s not “Not Like Us,” and it’s not “tv off.” It’s “All the Stars” from the Black Panther soundtrack.

With SZA floating on an incredible hook and Kendrick delivering uplifting, purposeful bars, the song hit a perfect sweet spot. It was commercial enough for everybody to latch onto, magical enough to lead a blockbuster soundtrack, and good enough to replay endlessly without getting old. Everything about it just worked.

This is one of those rare records you genuinely can’t call bad. And if you do? I might have to slap the hell out of you.

2. January 4, 2018: Bruno Mars and Cardi B Released “Finesse (Remix).”

Remixes have been kind of dead over the past few years, but one of my favorites in recent memory is definitely “Finesse (Remix).” The original already had infectious energy and nonstop party vibes, but adding Cardi B’s unapologetic, carefree presence made it an elite pairing.

Honestly, this feels like one of those records we’ll still be hearing 20 or 30 years from now at old-ass parties — the kind with Werther’s Originals in the vending machines.

3. January 4, 1974: Christopher Alan “Tricky” Stewart Was Born.

Everybody knows The-Dream, but how many people actually know Tricky Stewart? Together, the two have been responsible for a ridiculous run of hits, working with everyone from Jay-Z to Beyoncé to Rihanna. Even though he hasn’t been as active lately, trust — we still remember you over here at RGM.
