Physical Sales Are Thriving as R&B/Hip-Hop Dominates 2025 Music Consumption

R&B Hip-Hop

As streaming continues to dominate the industry, 2025 proved that physical formats are far from dead — with vinyl and CD sales thriving alongside record-breaking streaming numbers.

Vinyl once again made a massive statement this year, with The Life of a Showgirl finishing as the best-selling vinyl album of 2025 in the United States. The list blends modern pop, hip-hop, and timeless classics, showing just how wide-ranging vinyl buyers’ tastes have become. Albums like GNX, Short n’ Sweet, Hit Me Hard And Soft, and IGOR sat comfortably alongside legacy projects such as Rumours, Thriller, and Abbey Road, proving that nostalgia and new releases can coexist on turntables.

CDs also quietly had a strong year. The Life of a Showgirl topped CD sales as well, followed by releases like KARMA, DO IT, and DESIRE: UNLEASH. While CDs don’t generate the same buzz as vinyl, their continued success highlights a core group of fans who still value owning physical music — especially for major releases and collector-worthy projects.

On the streaming side, the United States remained the world’s largest music market, generating a staggering 1.5 trillion streams in 2025, according to Luminate. India followed at 490 billion, with Mexico and Brazil close behind, reinforcing how global music consumption has become. Europe and Asia continued to show steady growth, with Germany, the UK, Japan, and Indonesia all landing in the top ten.

Perhaps most telling of the year’s cultural direction, R&B and hip-hop officially ranked as the #1 genre in the U.S. for 2025, per Luminate. Between dominant streaming numbers, strong physical sales, and chart-topping releases, the genre continues to shape the sound of modern music — and 2025 made that clearer than ever.
