Lexa Gates – I Am (Album Review)

Lexa Gates

“I Am” is Lexa Gates at her most personal and unapologetic.

5. You’re Better Off

This is a breakup track filled with frustration and emotional push-and-pull.

In “You’re Better Off,” Lexa Gates confronts how the blame was always placed on her while her partner’s flaws went unchecked. She’s angry and hurt, tempted to react, but ultimately realizes the situation no longer deserves her energy. He was meant to be her peace, yet became her burden, and she understands now that she’ll shine with or without him.

The track blends effortless rapping with vulnerable singing over wild production, weaving together blaring horns, melancholic undertones, and explosive, bombastic energy. It’s certainly an ambitious effort.

4. Serious

This track is both hilarious and painfully real.

In “Serious,” Lexa Gates opens with what feels like a threat, then slowly reveals the vulnerability underneath it. She pleads to be let in, to be cared for, to be taken seriously. She lays out her needs and emotions unapologetically, owning every part of who she is. By the end of the track, what starts as humor settles into something deeply human and relatable.

Don’t you love how stripped-down this track feels? It’s like Lexa is singing in a restless orbit, circling the chaos, wanting out but never fully leaving, and that tension makes it insanely intriguing.

3. It Goes On

This is a strong opener and an immediate statement.

In “It Goes On,” Lexa Gates comes in talking her sh*t with confidence and precision, and her flow makes sure every word lands.

There’s an angsty, moody tone here, but it never crosses into whining — instead, it sharpens her edge. She sounds over it, unbothered, and fully aware that life keeps moving whether you’re ready or not. It’s cutthroat in the best way and sets the tone for the album perfectly.

2. Last Day

“Last Day” is about perspective.

In “Last Day,” Lexa encourages listeners to look inward rather than measure themselves against others, emphasizing that every journey comes with its own pace and challenges. The song carries a quiet urgency, reminding us that time isn’t guaranteed, and urges choosing yourself, living honestly, and doing what feels right while you still can.

My favorite part of this track is the production. It carries that Sunday morning, classic Kanye West–style soul. You can almost hear Ye muttering “dawg” over the beat. While Lexa’s soothing vocals glide perfectly across it, there’s also something about her chaos that fits just as naturally.

1. Estranged

“Estranged” explores how deeply love can alter the way you move through the world.

In “Estranged,” Lexa reflects on how someone has changed her—making her more vulnerable, more needy, more emotionally invested than she ever planned to be. She’s asking questions she never used to care about, feeling jealousy and longing in ways that feel unfamiliar.

Even with Lexa’s gritty rap style still intact, the track carries a rock-a-bye-baby softness that makes it extra precious.

RGM RATING

(78%)

Throughout I Am, Lexa Gates shares her inner thoughts, past relationships, emotional growth, and the person she’s becoming. The writing is raw and unfiltered, but never careless — every track feels intentional, reflective, and grounded in self-awareness.

Sonically, the album balances moodiness with confidence, vulnerability with sharp edges. Lexa doesn’t shy away from her flaws or contradictions; instead, she leans into them, which is dope as hell.

I Am is about self-definition — owning your emotions, your mistakes, and your growth without asking for permission. It’s a well-rounded, emotionally honest project that solidifies Lexa Gates as an artist who knows exactly who she is.
