J. Cole, Daylyt, and Ab-Soul Reignite Lyrical Fire on “A Plate of Collard Greens”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Three elite lyricists connect for a masterclass in sharp, competitive rap.

Something we should never take for granted is a rapper who truly does it for the love of the game. Three artists who embody that spirit are J. Cole, Daylyt, and Ab-Soul. Back in 2024, the trio connected for the underrated “Pi,” which landed on Cole’s Might Delete Later project. Now, an unreleased collaboration they did in 2023, “A Plate of Collard Greens,” has officially hit streaming services.

The track originally lived on YouTube two years ago and has now gained additional legitimacy with its release on Instagram. On it, Daylyt delivers a crafty verse, flowing effortlessly while openly welcoming competition. J. Cole follows with a relentless flow, breaking down how his mindset was shaped and warning that his peers are dancing with the devil without even realizing it.

Ab-Soul closes things out with an animated, punch-heavy (no pun intended) verse that feels like it is jumping off the page. He sounds so energized that he even claims Kendrick Lamar can get this work too. All three verses sit atop a soulful backdrop that carries almost no knock, allowing the lyricism to take center stage.

When rap was created, I’m not sure it was supposed to sound this elite. Jesus.
