Brittany Campbell brings attitude and soul together on “Grudges.”
I’m so high on Brittany Campbell, I’m not sure I should be behind the wheel. Not only does she have a stunning voice and an appreciation for great music (Erykah Badu, Emily King, Amy Winehouse, and Little Dragon are her inspirations), but the Brooklyn native also has “IT” to me (NPR seems to agree as they featured her track “Matter” on a playlist of theirs). You can just tell she was put on this musical earth to perform and entertain.
Her latest single, “Grudges,” confirms it instantly. Backed by production that mixes an edgy, old-school hip-hop knock with a hint of R&B soul, Brittany leans into a sly yet passionate vocal delivery as she reflects on the grudges she holds after dealing with people worse than the economy. C’mon, if you haven’t been living under a rock, you know you’ve been in similar situations.
I love how the track fuses unbothered energy with soulfulness, hip-hop with R&B, and petty with completely justified petty. I love it all!
