Larry June Cruises Through Familiar Territory on “The Machinist”

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Someone give Larry June an espresso shot, please.

Summer and Larry June go together like palm trees and sunshine. Over the years, the Bay Area rapper has become one of hip-hop’s most reliable providers of feel-good music, consistently delivering records that sound perfect for warm weather. His latest single, “The Machinist,” continues that trend.

The song is built around a classic West Coast formula. The production is smooth, relaxed, and packed with enough groove to immediately put listeners in a good mood.

Larry approaches the track exactly how you’d expect. Using a slow but steady flow, he spends much of the song discussing wealth, investments, luxury vehicles, and the benefits of building multiple streams of income. It’s familiar territory, but it’s territory that should never get old to young bosses.

What keeps the song afloat is its vibe. There’s something undeniably enjoyable about how effortless everything feels. The instrumental glides, and Larry follows along comfortably.

That said, I do wish he brought a little more energy to the performance. I’m OK with him sounding loopy, but on this s**t, it sounds like he needs a serious power nap.

Even with that flaw, “The Machinist” is another solid entry in Larry June’s catalog.
