Ice Spice – Like..? (Album Review)

No, this EP is not a bunch of “Munch” remixes (This review features the deluxe version of the album).

TOP 5

Honorable Mention. Princess Diana (Ft. Nicki Minaj)

Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s relationship is dope.

Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj are more like Princess Kitana and Millenna in “Princess Diana.” Why do I say that? Because they kick ass and take names in the song. The latter definitely blacks out on this s**t.

5. Gangsta Boo (Ft. Lil Tjay)

Drill producers couldn’t wait to remix the “I Need A Girl” beat.

I wonder if Ice Spice and Lil Tjay came up with the title for this song after Gangsta Boo’s death. I find it interesting that it sounds nothing like something the fallen Memphis rapper would have made. Anywho, the best thing about “Gangsta Boo” is the beat. It boasts a frantic rhythm and incorporates some of the same elements from Puff Daddy’s”I Need A Girl” beat. While Ice sounds just like she does on every other song here, I think Lil Tjay goes all out on his verse. Not only does he drop some tough-ass lyrics, but he also hits us with aggressive deliveries that show he’s fully recovered from his shooting incident. Tjay might just go on a 50 Cent run, y’all.

4. In Ha Mood

OK, “In Ha Mood” grew on me…

“In Ha Mood” is driven by a simple drill beat that suits Ice Spice’s style perfectly. Over it, she delivers a hook that straddles the line between catchy and repetitive. Ice also shares lyrics that indicate she knows she’s the s**t and cannot be flushed away. While I wouldn’t call this the best song I’ve ever heard, it feels like an extension of “Munch,” so her fans should be pleased with its release.

3. Deli

Ice Spice puts up 39 points and zero assists in this song.

“Deli” boasts one of those beats that pump fakes more than it shoots. But who cares about the beat? The star of the show is Ice. Throughout the song, she delivers nothing but body blows to her naysayers and critics. I love the aggression she displays from start to finish.

This song proves that Ice Spice can ride any beat. Listening to it felt equivalent to watching someone ride a mechanical bull.

2. Butterfly Ku

Ice Spice puts up a solid 29 points and 10 assists in “Butterfly Ku.”

“Butterfly Ku” is a good song, period. I like the uptempo, gentle drill beat that powers it. I also appreciate the way Ice Spice confidently delivers her verses, sounding completely focused and untouchable (Her unflappable flows and commanding lyrics practically force you to respect her). I definitely nodded my head in approval while listening to this banger.

1. Munch (Feelin U)

Ice Spice puts up a dusty triple-double in this song (10, 11, and 12). Hey, a triple-double is a triple-double, though.

Is “Munch (Feelin U)” the greatest song of all time? Probably not. However, what makes it a good listen is the extremely catchy hook and the fresh sound it brings to the world (Keep in mind; we haven’t really heard a lady drill rapper freak a song like this before, which adds to its appeal). Also, it has allowed the munches of the world to have grounds to sue (Take advantage of your rights, fellow Munches).

Imagine if they add the word ‘munch’ to the Dictionary. I’d love to see a kid ask an old white man at a Spelling Bee to use the word in a sentence!

RGM RATING

(C) (70%)

Ice Spice reminds me of Lil Nas X. Both artists have surprisingly overcome one-hit-wonder labels and emerged as up-and-coming superstars in the hip-hop genre. While I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m not blown away by Ice’s style of rapping, I do think her music is hella trendy and fun to listen to. It’s also very apparent that she’s improving, based on the new tracks from this deluxe edition (By next year, Ice might even become Kendrick Lamar 2.0). Overall, I love Ice’s personality, like her brand, and appreciate what she stands for. I implore hip-hop fans to have fun with her music. Rock out to her sped-up drill beats, whispery deliveries, and spicy lyrics. Just let your guard down and enjoy Ice Spice’s moment in the spotlight!
