Album Ratings (07/30/2023): Roy Woods, Tech N9ne & That Mexican OT

Roy Woods is back!

Roy Woods – Mixed Emotions

I was once so high on Roy Woods, I had the munches. He’s still loved, I just haven’t been paying much attention to his releases as of late. Whatever the case may be, Roy has returned to the music scene with a new album called Mixed Emotions, his first in a whopping six years!

If you like The Weeknd, you will like Mixed Emotions. In the album, Roy Woods hits us with high-pitched, hypnotizing vocal performances that pair perfectly with his content about heartbreak, love, and everything in between. While most of the album has a slow-burning vibe, you do get moments in which Roy toys with house, afropop, and hip-hop vibes. All in all, I think this project is a strong R&B effort.

Favorite Tracks: “Insecure,” “Test What I Know,” “Touch You,” “Unsettling.”

Tech N9ne – BLISS

Everyone knows that Tech N9ne is a legend. What’s crazy about him is that he’s been rapping for nearly 30 years now. The good news is this: It doesn’t seem like his skills have diminished at all. In BLISS, Tech’s latest release, he blesses us with unbelievable flows, crazy wordplay, killer punchlines, and unique lyrics. He also spit bars over everything from club beats to boom-bap beats to scary-ass beats.

I wish this album had better audio quality. Other than that, it’s a fun listen.

Favorite Tracks: “Knock,” “KC Huh? KC What?,” “Fatha Fig Ya (Food For Thought).”

That Mexican OT – Lonestar Luchador

That Mexican OT is a lighter, younger, and uncancelled version of DaBaby. This past weekend, the former dropped an eighteen-track project called Lonestar Luchador.

We get 17,000 words, booming beats, dynamic flows, animated deliveries, Texas accents, and unapologetic lyrics in Lonestar Luchador. OT’s fearlessness as a rapper and carefreeness as a human shine throughout this album as he talks about everything from peeing on girls to knocking opps off. On the real, he’s borderline a comedian.

That Mexican OT is definitely talented. I expect him to blow up in due time.

Favorite Tracks: “Brennan,” “Opp or 2,” “Hit List,” “Johnny Dang.”
