212ceilingface – Thorns (Album Review)

212ceilingface continues to abuse the alt in alt hip-hop successfully.

3. adjust

This might be the most traditional hip-hop track on this album, and it’s not even close to being traditional.

While 212ceilingface’s standout talent lies in his remarkable ability to blend various sounds, there’s a distinct pleasure in hearing him speak with unfiltered candor. In “adjust,” this transparency comes to the forefront. Instead of taking a backseat to the production, 212ceilingface takes the lead, offering insights into topics like coping with the loss of a friend, potentially in heaven or elsewhere, navigating stress, and expressing conflicted emotions about achieving his dreams.

Before the song blooms around 1:31, there’s a grungy, grind-out vibe that vividly conveys life’s complexities and challenges. It serves as a prime example of 212 allowing us to authentically connect with our emotions, providing a genuine exploration of how we truly feel about a particular experience.

2. _mightaswell (Ft. Ali’s Baby)

It feels like two or three songs are playing concurrently in “_mightaswell.”

“_mightaswell” amalgamates various sounds (what else is new?), incorporating a laidback vintage tone, a touch of skater ambiance, chilled and relaxed vibes, and even a somewhat chilling, almost paranormal-like element. Writing this review, I double-checked my open tabs to ensure I wasn’t inadvertently playing multiple songs simultaneously.

The rap verses in this song are fantastic. Featured guest Ali’s Baby and 212ceilingface seamlessly go back and forth, touching on themes of popping bottles, enjoying the company of models, and engaging in reckless partying. Their rap delivery is so swift that I would recommend having a transcript of their lyrics by your side to fully appreciate the intricacies of their verses.

1. honda ghosts

“Honda Ghosts” is a fascinating title to me (I’ve seen ghosts and owned Hondas).

I’m enamored with how this song’s drowsy and somber tone compels you to completely immerse in it. It’s as if the languid instrumentation, the melancholic sample, the weary vocals, and the vulnerable lyrics centered around discovering a distinctive comfort zone are all working in harmony to draw you into its world. The track seems designed to evoke a sense of melancholy, yet its symmetry creates an utterly exciting and remarkable listening experience.

RGM RATING

(B+)

Describing 212ceilingface’s music is indeed a challenge given its eclectic nature. It seems to weave through various genres, creating a unique sonic tapestry. From what I gather, the music encompasses elements of psychedelic hip-hop, rock, folk, and pop, forming a diverse blend. Additionally, there are unmistakable hallucinogenic vibes, along with trippy, ambient, and cosmic elements that add layers to the sound. It’s a fusion of genres that defies easy classification, creating a distinctive and immersive musical experience that draws from a wide range of influences. In essence, it’s a genre-defying journey through a kaleidoscope of musical styles and atmospheres.

It’s amusing to note that 212ceilingface possesses an exceptionally compelling rap voice, reminiscent of a commercial star. Throughout Thorns, he skillfully employs a clear and concise rap delivery, effectively showcasing both his vulnerable and confident rap personas. Despite his verses often being nestled amidst an array of effects and ornate production, they manage to stand out, leaving a lasting impact on the listener. The juxtaposition of his distinctive rap style against the backdrop of intricate production adds a layer of uniqueness to his sound.

I’m truly mesmerized by the diverse sounds that 212ceilingface has woven together within “Thorns,” but what truly resonates with me is the emotional depth he manages to evoke. Each song elicits a unique emotional response—from hope to despair, rebelliousness to carefreeness, joy to overexertion. In short, this album takes your emotions on a rollercoaster, akin to a game of Hacky sack, kicking them around and leaving a lasting impact.

I don’t know how to go about the rest of my day now after listening to this project…
