Big Sean Shines In “Anderson Estate Freestyle”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
LOS ANGELES – MAY 12: Big Sean arrives at the “Wango Tango” Concert at The Home Depot Center on May 12, 2012 in Carson, CA

Big Sean is considered to be in the running for the best rapper in the game, alongside J. Cole, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar. While some may argue that his bars aren’t as big and bold as theirs, I personally believe the only thing holding him back is his unwillingness to put up with the bulls**t that comes with being a major rap star. Whatever the case may be, Sean is still rapping and very f**king good at it. Yesterday, he dropped a freestyle that confirms this.

Big Sean frequently praises J. Dilla beats, so it’s no shock that he chose to rap over a revamped version of Dilla’s “Drop” beat in “Anderson Estate Freestyle.” What’s equally unsurprising is how adeptly he navigates the beat. Armed with clever punchlines and stellar wordplay, the Detroit rapper discusses his disinterest in facing off against the big 3 (Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole), his recent accomplishments, and the hunger that has always driven him. While his initial delivery on the track is stellar, he tends to ramble a bit later on. Nevertheless, the freestyle effectively highlights the fire that still burns within him.

Big Sean’s next album needs to hit harder than Mike Tyson.
