Common still raps at a high level.

Common will go down as one of my favorite rappers of all time. I think he has a legendary voice, has always talked about meaningful s**t in his music, and has this whole competitive aura that you need to be considered the best. As of late, we haven’t gotten a ton of music from him; however, when he has hopped on the mic, he’s killed it. In “Wise Up,” a track produced by the legendary Pete Rock, Common sounds hungrier than ever.

“Wise Up” is powered by an explosive Pete Rock beat that definitely isn’t for the weak. Thankfully, Common hits several clutch shots on it. Using his signature emphatic rap style, the Chicago native does some storytelling, bringing up the struggle, resiliency, adversity, and maturation required to make it out of the South Side of Chicago. I know my explanation of Common’s lyrics sounds simple, but trust me, the way he breaks them down is actually powerful.
