If you’re a Russ fan, you’ve been fed pretty well this year. For the past couple of weeks, he’s dropped some pretty solid singles. Y’all just haven’t cared because the NBA Playoffs have been on, and y’all were engulfed in the Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake beef. I also think the songs he dropped weren’t as explosive. Today, Russ did return to the scene with an exciting new single called “Best Friend.” It features Melii, who hasn’t fed us nearly enough in 2024.
The very first thing that will catch your attention about “Best Friend” is the hook. I know you’re going to hear it and ask yourself, “where the f**k do I know this s**t from?” Well, let me help you out: It’s from Akon’s hook on Baby Bash’s smash hit “Baby, I’m Back.” While I wouldn’t say Russ does it justice with his reimagined version of it, I do think he does enough to make you enjoy it. However, I do think the best thing he delivers in this track is his verse. It’s assertive and features some sly lyrics that are designed to make bad chicks feel empowered and cared for. As for Melii, I absolutely love her verse. It’s bold, in your face, Nicki Minaj-ish, and features a nice little splash of Spanish. Overall, I think “Best Friend” is a very fun track.
