TOP 5

5. Goodbye (Warm Up) (Ft. Asake)

Ayra Starr says “Sayonara” to her ex in “Goodbye.”

One of Ayra Starr’s strongest suits is her spiciness. In “Goodbye,” she’s spicier than Chipotle’s hot sauce on a good day. In the track, Ayra boldly lets her ex know she wants her space. As for Asake, he comes across as someone who’s ready to live life on the edge, whether his partner is with him or not.

There are more dynamic songs on this album, but I personally love how smooth and sly this track sounds as a whole.

4. Control

Ayra wants you to take control, so use your remote wisely.

In “Control,” Ayra Starr says she’s lit, has ice on her lips, and is ready to be gotten right now. What the hell are you waiting for? Go and ger her, brodie.

The first thing that grabs your attention about “Control” is its borrowed cadence from Shakira’s hit “Hips Don’t Lie” from back in the day. However, don’t fret: the two songs sound completely distinct. “Control” has more of an island vibe, coupled with seductive vocals and spicier lyrics. I’m pretty sure Ayra’s hips aren’t telling lies, though.

3. Last Heartbreak (Ft. Giveon)

Ayra Starr and Giveon sound amazing together in “Last Heartbreak.”

In “Last Heartbreak,” Ayra Starr and Giveon discuss their toxic relationship. The former talks about feeling like she isn’t getting the treatment she deserves, while the latter apologizes for being a misguided individual.

I think this track actually features one of Ayra’s most impactful vocal performances. As for Giveon, as expected, he hits us with something totally moving, especially with his sturdy vocals.

2. Woman Commando

“Woman Commando” is superhero music for all the strong women out there.

If you’re a woman who’s doing well for yourself, I highly recommend listening to this track when you’re ready to celebrate yourself. In the song, Ayra Starr, Anitta, and Coco Jones all discuss partying hard, enjoying ladies’ nights, and placing more trust in God than in men. It’s all about positive vibes.

The song’s style perfectly matches the festive lyrics delivered by these three lovely women. With a lively tempo, plenty of energy, unexpected dramatic violins, and an array of fun melodies, it’s a true celebration. Interestingly, they all sing with a hint of slyness, suggesting that those shots are starting to take effect.

1. Commas

“Commas” is what got Ayra Starr commas.

In “Commas,” Ayra Starr discusses her faith in God and how it allows her to move fearlessly through life. She also talks about taking exquisite vacations and, most importantly, seeing her money grow faster than a kid who eats vegetables.

Overall, “Commas” is one of those tracks that will make you feel great inside. It features dramatic production with just as many country vibes as Afropop vibes. As for Ayra, her vocals are undeniably impressive, even though they often feel subdued. It’s almost like she’s full from eating well and is now trying to let us know how happy she is before the itis hits her.

RGM RATING

(B-) (82%)

Ayra Starr is one of the most boisterous and confident personalities in the music industry today. I highly recommend listening to an interview with her. What’s dope is that her personality comes out in full force in The Year I Turned 21.

While Ayra Starr mainly dabbles in Afrobeat vibes throughout this project, she does much more than that. She drops a few borderline rap verses, goes back and forth with American R&B singers, and even links up with Latin superstars. That said, I think the biggest reason this album is a great listen is the personality Ayra brings to it. Her lyrical content centers around self-love, celebrating her wins, and enjoying her youth to the fullest, which, when paired with her passionate, authentic, and raw vocal performances, makes for quite the listen. Overall, Ayra’ confirms she’s a superstar with the release of this project.
