Eminem Drops Magical Bars In “Houdini”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Eminem’s next act promises to be a great one.

Eminem’s remarkable rap career appears to be reaching a turning point, signaling the end of an era as we know it. This summer, he will release a new album titled The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce).

Although details about the album’s structure and featured artists remain scarce, Eminem took to Instagram to promote the first single, “Houdini.” In a brief video on the app, he chats with David Blaine, who astonishingly eats a glass of wine at the end of their conversation. Now that the song has been released, it’s safe to say that it lives up to the hype generated by its teaser.

Eminem sounds like his old playful self in “Houdini.” In the track, he talks about hopping on tracks like Kangaroos, caring less if he gets canceled, and wanting to collab with Megan Thee Stallion so he can “have a shot at her feet.” He also sends f**k yous out to Paul Rosenberg (Eminem’s manager), Dr. Dre, and his kids. Yeah, he went bonkers here.

I know a bunch of you hip-hop heads want to see Eminem knock heads off, but I actually really like the approach he took for this track. “Houdini” is powered by a fun-loving, “Without Me”-like beat that is very nostalgic. While Eminem’s lyrics are all over the place (Especially in the first verse), I think the rap style he employs is pretty normal. He flows well on his verses and drops a pretty hypnotic chorus. It’s everything else in the background that’s crazy.

There’s a whole generation of people who don’t know what they just heard (Remember, “The Real Slim Shady” came out in 2000).
