Maggie Andrew Warns About Toxic Relationships In “About Us”

Rating: 5 out of 5.

An anthem that honestly tackles a toxic love.

Maggie Andrew is a phenomenal singer-songwriter from Nova Scotia, Canada, known for her remarkable diversity in music. She skillfully navigates various genres, including punk, melodic rap, R&B, and indie rock, while penning heartfelt tracks that deeply resonate with listeners.

Maggie has collaborated with notable writers and producers, such as Blackbear, Ash Riser (who has worked with Kendrick Lamar and Ab-Soul), and Yeti Beats (known for his work with Doja Cat and SZA). Her talents have been recognized in several prominent publications, including Rolling Stone and Billboard, and she has received numerous award nominations.

Recently, Maggie Andrew released an 8-track EP titled DAY JOB. One standout track from the EP is “About Us.”

“About Us” gave me chills. In the track, Maggie Andrew opens up about a past physically and mentally abusive relationship. She reflects on her regret for staying in it as long as she did and for keeping the relationship a secret from her loved ones, attributing it to her youth, blindness in love, and manipulation. With domestic abuse being a topic that doesn’t receive enough serious attention, it’s refreshing to see someone address it with such openness and honesty.

Aside from the song’s deep lyrics, it also features a great build-up, an intoxicating indie rock instrumental, and an absolutely soul-clenching vocal performance by Maggie, where she seamlessly switches between a soft, edgy, and vulnerable sound.

Give “About Us” a shot below.
