Omar Apollo creates amazing ballads in “God Said No.”

5. Against Me

People holding s**t against me is also one of my pet peeves.

As someone new to Omar Apollo, I’m still discovering the extent of his musical talent. I already knew he could sing his ass off and create powerful ballads, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear him delve into hip-hop in “Against Me.” Though his raps only appear occasionally, they are fire as hell to listen to. Besides that, I enjoy the high-pitched chorus, which is very Frank Ocean-like, and Omar’s unapologetic lyrics. Actually, that’s putting it mildly—Omar exudes the confidence of a man with his partner on a leash bigger than the one they have on Scooby-Doo.

4. Life’s Unfair

You damn right, life is unfair. The other day, I accidentally ate a fake perc.

Believe it or not, the vibes are impeccable in “Life’s Unfair.” The track is powered by a fun-loving instrumental that will make you dance your ass off, complemented by Omar Apollo’s beautiful and therapeutic vocals. Unfortunately, the song’s lyrics delve into betrayal and its impact on his feelings towards the relationship. Ouch.

3. Done With You

Is the best feeling in the world being done with someone?

Even though this track is called “Done With You,” it’s surprisingly vibrant. It features a sunny instrumental full of bombastic horns and feel-good vibes. As for Omar Apollo, he delivers a highly infectious vocal performance. Too bad he’s singing about wanting to be free from his partner because he’s tired of their s**t.

Thank GOD I actually listen to lyrics.

2. Less Of You

“Less Of You” has a vibrant, unmistakably gay vibe that I love!

“Less Of You” is powered by a futuristic (well, what people in the ’80s thought the future would sound like) beat that will thrive in a gay bar. As for Omar Apollo, he delivers an intergalactic-sounding vocal performance that pairs interestingly with his lyrics about one-night stands you wish would last a week. This track will resonate with everyone, from The Terminator to Ricky Martin to Stormy Daniels.

1. Spite

“Spite” is the most streamed track from this album, and after listening to it, I fully understand why.

In “Spite,” Omar Apollo talks about being in a long-distance relationship that is starting to irritate him for various reasons. One of those reasons is that he feels like his lover is afraid to show him off. S**t, been there before.

Despite “Spite” boasting somewhat depressing lyrics, I like its pulse. The song has a nice tempo, a lively R&B/rock beat, a catchy chorus, and slightly edgy vocals. Interestingly, I feel good after listening to the track.

RGM RATING

(A) (94%)

I see stark similarities between Omar Apollo and Frank Ocean, whom he was rumored to have dated. Both pour their hearts into the music they make, creating thoughtful, gentle, enlightening, and touching concoctions. That said, God Said No is an album you fully need to internalize. It features beautiful production, gorgeous vocal performances, and lyrical content that tackles love and heartbreak in distinctive and raw ways. Omar, you made yourself a new fan.
