Rating: 3.5 out of 5.I don’t think I’ve heard Lil Tjay sound this cold in years.
Lil Tjay has been pretty reflective and thankful since he recovered from being shot a few years ago. These days, his music usually features dramatic production and very emotional melodic raps. For those who have been following Tjay, you know he also has a gritty side, but it hasn’t been as prominent recently.
All that changed today. After hitting us with the introspective “Told Ya” and the touching “No No,” Lil Tjay has returned with a tough-ass single called “Took A While (Be Us).”
Stood down, took a while for me to be up (Be up)
Youngin from the mud, so I T up (T up)
Pull up scorin’ on you niggas, tell ’em, “D up” (D)
‘Fore I signed another deal, I was three up (Three)
Probably one of the last, they thought it was C up (It was C up)Lil Tjay in “Took A While (Be Us)”
Lil Tjay sounds back to his demonic form in “Took A While (Be Us).” He talks about his days on the block, being addicted to making money, securing major record deals, and hooking up with supermodels. While most of what he says pertains to his past, he also touches on some of his current activities.
I love how this track sounds. The menacing beat and Lil Tjay’s dark tone throughout are captivating. I also enjoy the effortless hook and the steady flow he brings. We really need more songs like this from the New Yorker.
