Thisizlondon, Starr, and 6LACK’s “PINACOLADA”— The perfect recipe for a hit song.

This week’s hot new collaboration features Thisizlondon, Ayra Starr, and 6LACK, an interesting mix of talents. If you’re unfamiliar with Thisizlondon, he is the Nigerian-British DJ and record producer best known for his viral “Calm Down” remix. Ayra Starr, a Nigerian singer-songwriter, has already made her mark on the Billboard charts and Spotify streams early in her career. She excels in blending Afropop and soul, fusing traditional and modern sounds seamlessly. Meanwhile, Atlanta-based singer, songwriter, and rapper 6LACK (pronounced “black”) has been known for a bit longer after his hit single “PRBLMS” in 2016. 

Despite Thisizlondon’s status and recognition, “PINACOLADA” is his first single as a solo artist. For this assignment, he displays his known strengths with his new-to-the-public talents.

“PINACOLADA” perfectly tailors to Afropop, Afrobeats, and R&B fans. It’s an upbeat song with a sensual feel that gets you moving. The African influence is easily felt throughout the song— particularly its beat, instrumental, and lyrics. As a Caribbean, the song gives me a sense of home and a nostalgic feeling of the traditional music I grew up with. This sound easily keeps the culture alive in potentially mainstream music while also preserving the authenticity of Thisizlondon and Starr’s culture. Overall, this is the collab we didn’t know we needed, yet it is the perfect match.
